Effete LaFoot was the temporary winch elevator operator on Skull Island. He was fairly short man with a peg leg and tended to stutter often when spoken to.

He took some Orientation Seminars for this job and replaced Brawnbeard who was sick. He said to Guybrush that he was unsure whether there was indeed a Smuggler's Cave downside, and if the elevator he was operating could hold Guybrush's weight. He also figured the maximum capacity of the elevator was roughly twenty pounds, but Guybrush was heavier.

He occasionally opens a door and King André angrily tells him to close the door as the air draft blows the candles.

Then, while Guybrush claims his victory over a hand of poker, Effete shows up again to ask if he should sign the receipt a deliveryman brought. This time the candles are blown, allowing Guybrush to steal the Goodsoup Family Diamond and leave, while André and Cruff are fighting each other in the dark.

Notes[]

  • If Guybrush stays for a long time in the Cave without talking to King André, Effete wll open the door every 3 minutes or so for various reasons; to check if Guybrush reached safely, because he is going to lunch, asking for a good Thai restaurant nearby, looking for the time cards, asking the name of a story, asking for 20 pieces of eight for the vending machine...
  • If Guybrush were unsuccessful in reaching Smuggler's Cave after one try, he would push Effete off the cliff after acquiring the huge uncursed diamond from King Andre.
  • The CoMI strategy guide mentions him as Jean LaFoot.
