Flotsam Island is a jungle-covered island in the Gulf of Melange that was explored by Guybrush Threepwood in Tales of Monkey Island.

The winds on the island, mysteriously blowing all inwards, meant that anyone who landed there would be unable to sail away. The Island is also surrounded by crystal reefs that tears up the ships that are being caught in the winds.

The island also have a large hidden temple of the Vacaylians, the ancient inhabitants of the island.

History[]

Past[]

Flotsam Island was once an island inhabited by the Vacaylians who tried to live on land and worshiped wind gods. They built a giant wind control device that allowed them to control the island's winds.

One day, the scientist named Marquis DeSinge were exiled to the deserted island by King Louis, after being accused for inhuman experiments. He was the first person on the island, until numerous pirates were washed ashore on the island. None of them could leave the island, due to the winds always blowing inwards and no ship could sail away. The pirates built a town of the sea flotsam that washed ashore on the island, including Club 41, Flotsam Island Courthouse, Keehauler Gazette, DeSinge's lab and a glass blower house. Eventually they had enough materials to build a ship, the Screaming Narwhal, but they could not sail away on it.

Launch of the Screaming Narwhal[]

After the disastrous result of using a botched up cursed cutlass, a gunpowder explosion flew Guybruish with his infected pox hand onto the shores of Flotsam Island.

Trivia[]

  • It takes its name from 'flotsam': marine debris floating in the ocean after a shipwreck, and it has that name because of the island's unique winds, resulting in several sailors and debris to become marooned there. Most of this debris was used to build the buildings on Flotsam.
