Monkey Kombat was a type of ancient fighting method which incorporated the Ultimate Insult.

The battle would involve two opponents who would adopt combat stances and attempt to outdo the other. Each stance dominates two stances and is defeated by the other two.

Different stances would be adopted when fighters spoke a series of three words from a choice of four from the monkey language. The words used in combat are 'oop', 'aak', 'chee' and 'eek'.

The fighting stances are:

  • Anxious Ape
  • Bobbing Baboon
  • Gimpy Gibbon
  • Charging Chimp
  • Drunken Monkey

Guybrush Threepwood and Monkey Kombat[edit | edit source]

Legendary pirate Guybrush Threepwood learned the art of Monkey Kombat while stranded on Monkey Island by the demon pirate LeChuck and Ozzie Mandrill.

After being taught the basics by monkey prince Jojo Jr., Guybrush honed his skills by practicing among the other monkey inhabitants. Once he had mastered the art he once more challenged Jojo Jr. For defeating the master he was awarded Jojos ceremonial bronze hat.

[edit | edit source]

After building a giant Ultimate Insult, Guybrush escaped Monkey Island and confronts LeChuck. They used Monkey Kombat in their final battle on Mêlée Island.

Guybrush gained victory however by matching LeChucks moves rather than overwhelming him. In this case, both combatants were fuelled by the power of Ultimate Insults. Threepwoods Insult was bigger and therefore more powerful.

Game History[edit | edit source]

Monkey Kombat appeared in 'Escape from Monkey Island' in place of Insult Sword Fighting. It had the same mechanic whereby the player had to learn the different stances and words and practice among various NPCs before challenging the master.

Trivia[edit | edit source]
