The Three Trials were three tasks that the Pirate Leaders said that all pirates must pass.
They included mastering the three major pirating skills:
- Sword Fighting
- Thievery
- Treasure Huntery
The details of the trials differed according to where they were given.
Once completed, some pirates choose to become focused on one area more than others.
Guybrush Threepwoods Trials[]
Guybrush Threepwood was faced with these on Mêlée Island order to become a real pirate. His personal trials to prove his worth were:
- Win a duel with Carla the Sword Master and bring back proof.
- Steal the Idol of Many Hands from the Governor's Mansion.
- Find the Treasure of Mêlée Island.
Guybrush was unable to complete his trials formally, as while he was complete them, LeChuck raided Mêlée and abducted Elaine Marley.
Trivia[]
In the first Monkey Island game, the trials are mentioned by the leaders in this order, however the player is free to complete them in any order is more suitable; after completing them, the player can bring the prize to the Pirate Leaders to see a response, but this is totally optional.
The story with Elaine's abduction occurs after finishing the last Trial, whichever it is, so Guybrush is unable to show the result to the Leaders.
Completing the Idol of Many Hands Trial shows a cutscene with Guybrush and Elaine; however if the player leaves this Trial as the last one, this curscene won't be seen, as Elaine will be abducted.
